C.C. MSC DANIELA (Panama, 14000-teu), Singapore to Suez, caught fire off Sri Lanka, west of Colombo, 4-Apr-2017. The Sri Lanka Navy, Authorities and Indian Navy dispatched vessels and helicopters to douse the flames. Fire was under control on 7-April-2017.

M/V STELLAR DAISY (Marshall I), Guaiba-I Terminal to China, with 24 crewmembers (8 S. Koreans & 16 Filipinos) went missing off the coast of Uruguay 2000 miles east of Montevideo, has probably sunk. The contact with the bulk carrier broke off on 31-Mar-2017, shortly after one of the crew members had sent a text message that the ship was taking in water. On 1-April, Uruguay's Coastguard discovered fuel and debris in the area, coordinating search with 4 vessels.

M/T XING LONG ZHOU 589 (China) suffered an explosion and ensuing fire in the Yellow Sea some 115 miles east of Qingdao, 19-Mar-2017. Two salvage ships, as well as a helicopter, were sent to assist. The vessel was taken in tow, 13 out of 16 crew members have been evacuated. Three more went missing. On 20-March, the tanker was moving south most probably under tow.

M/V TINAZTEPE (Turkey) sank on the Misurata anchorage, 16-Mar-2017, being caught in rough weather with wave heights of four meters. Six of the 13 Turkish crew members went missing, seven were rescued. The SAR operation of the Libyan Coastguard was going on. The rescued crew members were taken to a nearby hotel where they were undergoing health checkups.

M/V SKAGERN (Netherlands)’s crew reported water ingress after grounding near Trollhattan, Sweden. The grounding was caused by a black out causing electronics and engine to fail. When the emergency generator started working, it was too late and the ship ran onto the rocks, 9-Mar-2017. Divers were expected on site to check the extent of the damage to the hull.

M/T INGRID (Belgium) has an injured chief engineer medevaced by US Coast Guard helicopter aircrew between Freeport and Galveston in 2-Mar-2017. The C/E broke his leg after getting hit with the anchor chain. He was taken a Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

M/V SNAV TOSCANA (Italy) suffered fire in the engine room on 19-Feb-2017 while the ferry which had come from Naples was one mile off the port of Palermo. No injuries were reported among the 113 passengers and 75 crew members. Firefighters intervened immediately with the assistance of the port authority and the police after the master had maneuvered his ship into port. The firefighters completed the extinguishing and cooling operations of the engine room.

Three vessels were engulfed in flames after an explosion on the Yangtze River near the Jiangxinzhou Islet off Nanjing, 17-Feb-2017. 12 people were thrown into the water by an explosion, four of them died. The biggest vessel among the three was M/V CHUQI 18 (China), at least one other is a tanker, too. The fire was extinguished after several hours of firefighting.

M/T SAGAN (Antigua &B), Taiwan to Japan, w/ fuel oil cargo, ran hard aground in rocky shallows of Nakanoshima Channel due to bad weather. The cargo tanks were breached followed by water ingress. Due to danger of capsizing the 18 crew members were evacuated by Japan Coast Guard helicopters to shore. Oil has been leaking from the vessel, but rough seas make the salvage and anti-pollution operations complicated and dangerous. The leak is increasing. 12-Feb-2017.

M/V SK No.1 (S. Korea) collided with a 161-ton tug about 1.5 kilometers off the Mokpogu Lighthouse in the Mokpo Strait on 2-Feb-2017. The aggregates carrier was en route from Jeju to Mokpo. The tug sank, its four crew members were rescued by the freighter which suffered damages at the starboard side of the bow with the bulbous bow being penetrated.
