Lifting of Iran sanctions offers Cyprus opportunities, requires caution

The decision by world powers to lift sanctions against Iran after the isolated South Asian country complied with the terms of a July nuclear deal, offers Cyprus important opportunities which the island has to cautiously exploit.

The shipping sector, also affected by the sanctions as the prevented companies from selling naval equipment and other related services, may benefit from the lifting of the embargo, while Cyprus's banking sector may take advantage of new opportunities by capitalising on its flexibility, the former chairman of the Cyprus Shipping Council Eugen Henning Adami said.

The three-year, EU-funded project CASCADe has been completed in December 2015. Its main focus was to improve communication and cooperation within a ship bridge team by optimising the bridge design and by developing new ways in which information is shared and displayed. The project involved seven partners from five European countries.

Fitch Affirms Cyprus' Positive Economic Outlook

Following recent developments in the island's implementation of its economic adjustment programme, international credit rating agency Fitch has affirmed that Cyprus is no longer assumed to require its entire €10 billion bail-out international aid.

Mastermind Shipmanagement Ltd aims to establish offices and to offer service where our customers need us. We are now expanding further and have opened a new office in Kotor, Montenegro.

-We have customers who for some time have been in need of our services in this region. As a result of this we have now decided to open an office in Kotor.

Following the good developments of the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF), whose members charter tanker vessels, Mastermind Shipmanagement (MSM) has decided to make use of their published new ‘Recommendations Relating to Requirements Governing Seafarers’ Hours of Work and Rest’

The OCIMF Recommendations set out minimum expectations which it is hoped shipping companies will take into account to achieve compliance with IMO and ILO rules, to prevent fatigue and reduce fatigue related incidents. The Recommendations were developed in co-operation with the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the International Shipping Federation (ISF), who represent maritime employers during the negotiations at IMO and ILO on seafarers’ work and rest hours.

CASCADe Press Release - New R&D Project to Help Enhance Maritime Safety

A new three year European Research Project, part funded by the EU has been launched to help increase safety on-board vessels. CASCADe, (model-based Cooperative and Adaptive Ship-based Context Aware Design) aims to address the lack of symbiosis which exists between current bridge design, operational procedures and the end user.

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) in cooperation with the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA) have developed a voluntary Adopt a Ship Programme. The Programme has a dual purpose; firstly to encourage youngsters to follow a career in shipping and secondly to promote shipping as the most safe, economic and environmentally friendly mode of transport.
